For the Bicentennial, movie star John Wayne had the idea that an American Freedom Train could help energize a fractured nation. With the country reeling from Vietnam, Watergate, and economic uncertainty, the Freedom Train managed something remarkable: it united millions of Americans in a shared celebration of 200 years of freedom.
It carried historic documents, treasured artifacts, and a message of civic pride — all aboard a traveling exhibition that brought the story of America to its people.
The American Freedom Train is poised to return to the tracks in 2026 and will extend the national celebration to 21 months, the same length as the Bicentennial celebration. The red, white, and blue steam train will be the most recognizable, far-reaching, and memorable part of America’s 250th-anniversary celebrations.
